An Elegant Maternity Portrait Session with a Boston Ballet Principal Dancer

Hi there! I’m Alice. Welcome to my blog. This blog is where I share some of our favorite photo sessions and offer inspiration to help you dream up your own perfect portraits.
There is something incredibly special about photographing maternity sessions for artists. Recently, I had the honor of photographing a Boston Ballet soloist dancer during her maternity portrait session in my studio. Watching the way she moved — even during pregnancy — was both powerful and graceful.
Maternity photography is always about celebrating a moment in time, but when the subject is a dancer, the beauty of movement and expression adds another layer of storytelling. This session combined classic maternity portraits, ballet-inspired poses, and glowing backlit images to create a timeless collection of photographs that highlight both motherhood and artistry.

Ballet-Inspired Maternity Portraits
A ballet dancer carries years of training in her posture, arms, and movement. Even the smallest gesture feels intentional and elegant. During the session, we incorporated subtle ballet poses that reflected her identity as a dancer while still focusing on the beauty of pregnancy.
Instead of dramatic choreography, we focused on soft, graceful lines — gentle arm movements, turned shoulders, and elongated posture that naturally highlighted the baby bump.
These ballet-inspired maternity photos felt both refined and deeply personal, honoring her life on stage while celebrating the new chapter she is entering.
Classic Studio Maternity Portraits
Alongside the artistic dance poses, we also captured a series of classic maternity portraits. These images focus on simplicity — beautiful lighting, elegant posing, and emotional connection. The dad-to-be, Yue Shi, a Principal Dancer at Boston Ballet, was so excited during the session to capture this special milestone.
Classic maternity portraits never go out of style. Years from now, these images will still feel timeless and meaningful. The goal is always to create photographs that feel natural, elegant, and authentic, allowing the expecting mother to feel confident and beautiful.
Dramatic Backlit Maternity Photos
One of my favorite parts of this session was creating backlit maternity images. Backlighting creates a soft glow around the body, emphasizing the silhouette of pregnancy in a very artistic way.
The light gently wraps around the figure, highlighting the curve of the belly and creating an almost ethereal feeling. These images feel intimate, powerful, and deeply emotional.
Backlit maternity photography is a beautiful way to create something that feels fine-art inspired while still remaining simple and elegant.

Celebrating Strength, Grace, and Motherhood
Every maternity session tells a different story. This one celebrated not only motherhood but also the strength, discipline, and beauty of a professional dancer.
Pregnancy changes the body in incredible ways, and documenting this time through photography allows families to preserve memories that pass far too quickly.
Working with artists, professionals, and mothers-to-be from across the Greater Boston area is one of the most meaningful parts of my work.
Planning Your Own Maternity Portrait Session
Maternity sessions are typically scheduled between 28 and 34 weeks of pregnancy, when the baby bump is beautifully visible while still allowing comfortable movement.
My studio sessions are designed to create a relaxed and supportive environment where expecting mothers can feel confident and celebrated.
Behind the Scene
At the end of this post, I’ve included two behind-the-scenes videos from this maternity session. In the first video, you can see how I guide my clients through classic maternity portraits — from adjusting posture to refining hand placement and small details that make a big difference in the final images. My goal is always to help expecting mothers feel comfortable, confident, and beautifully posed.
The second video shows a few ballet-inspired moments from the session. I love creative collaboration with my clients, especially when they bring their own artistic background into the shoot. While exploring these expressive poses, safety always comes first, and we make sure every movement feels comfortable and supported.
