As a Boston family photographer, this is truly my favorite time of the year — catching up with returning families, meeting new ones, and sharing the joy and magic of Christmas through timeless photos.
Every year, our Christmas mini sessions are one of the most popular offerings at Alice Lin Photography. Families travel from all over Boston, Lexington, Winchester, Burlington, and beyond to experience our festive setups, designed with love and care to capture the spirit of the holidays. Each year, I create unique, cozy, and cheerful holiday scenes perfect for kids of all ages — from adorable toddlers to energetic big kids (and parents, too!).
What to Expect from Your Holiday Mini Session Experience
One of the most common questions I get is:
“Will 20 minutes really be enough for a mini session?”
The answer is yes! With years of experience photographing hundreds of families during mini sessions, I’ve fine-tuned an efficient and enjoyable workflow that allows me to capture a wide variety of photos — from group portraits to candid moments — all within that short time frame.
Here’s what your experience will look like from start to finish:
1. Booking and Preparation
Once you book your holiday mini session with Alice Lin Photography, you’ll receive a confirmation email right away. On my website, you’ll also find outfit recommendations — including examples and links to clothing options that photograph beautifully in my Christmas sets.
Unlike my full sessions, which include a pre-session phone consultation, all the details for mini sessions are conveniently available online in a detailed prep guide.
2. Getting to the Studio
Before your session day, you’ll receive an email reminder with all the logistics and instructions.
My studio is located at 100 TradeCenter Drive, Suite 660, Woburn, MA, in the Greater Boston area.
For easy navigation, simply search Breakout Games Woburn and enter through the North B Gate right next to it. It’s a stroller-friendly path with no stairs, making it easy for families with little ones to access.
3. During the Session
When you arrive, I’ll greet you and confirm if you plan to do any outfit changes during your mini session. If so, I’ll manage the workflow to ensure we make the most of your time.
My mini sessions are designed to be flexible and inclusive — grandparents and extended families are always welcome! If you have two core families or would like more time for group photos, you can easily book two back-to-back sessions or upgrade to a longer version.
For larger groups, I usually begin with grandparents and kids, then move into full family portraits. This approach helps children warm up naturally — they feel safe and relaxed when surrounded by loved ones. Once everyone is comfortable, we move on to smaller groupings like parents with kids, siblings together, and individual portraits.
4. The Flow of the Session

To make sure every 20-minute mini session is efficient, I follow a workflow that balances posed portraits and candid moments. My goal is to create a gallery full of variety — no repeated angles or stiff poses.
That said, as every parent knows, not everything always goes as planned — especially with little ones! Instead of forcing poses, I let kids be themselves. I have plenty of fun props and interactive setups that invite children to play, explore, and show their true personalities.
Some of my favorite images come from those spontaneous giggles and curious looks — the real, unscripted magic of childhood. When parents are relaxed and engaged, it helps create a joyful atmosphere where authentic moments happen naturally.
