Wondering what to wear for newborn photos? You’re not alone—this is one of the most common questions parents ask during the pre-session consultation. Choosing the right outfits can completely change how your photos look and feel. The goal is simple: soft, timeless, and focused on your baby. In this guide, I’ll walk you through exactly what to wear for newborn photos—from how to coordinate your family outfits to what moms, dads, siblings, and newborns should wear for a beautifully cohesive and natural look.

What to wear for newborn photos: how to coordinate family outfits

When thinking about what to wear for newborn photos, it’s important to look at your family as a whole—not just individual outfits.

Many of these guidelines don’t just apply to newborn sessions—they work for all family photos, whether you have a newborn or older kids. The goal is simple: highlight your baby as the main subject while reducing visual distractions.

If you’re planning to display your photos at home, think of your session as creating wall art. Your outfit choices should complement your home’s interior style for a more cohesive and timeless look.

1. Keep the style consistent

If your look is casual, keep everyone casual.
If you’re going for a more elevated look, everyone should align with that.

Mixing styles (for example, one person very dressed up while another is super casual) can make the photos feel visually unbalanced.

2. Coordinate colors (not matchy-matchy)

Instead of wearing identical outfits, use color to create a cohesive look.

A simple approach:

  • Choose 2–3 main light tones for the family
  • Add 1 subtle accent color

For example, an accent color can show up in:

  • Mom’s belt
  • A child’s bow tie
  • A subtle plaid layer

Too many colors can feel overwhelming and take attention away from your baby.

3. Avoid patterns

Patterns—especially on adults—can easily draw attention away from your baby (and yes, dads are important too 😉, but you know what I mean).

Solid colors are always the safest and most timeless choice.

If you love plaid, the best way to incorporate it is as an accent—such as layering a plaid shirt under a sweater, letting just a hint show at the collar or sleeves.

For newborn sessions in my studio, I offer both a boho lifestyle setup and a traditional portrait style. Both are designed to be classic, timeless, and focused on your baby.

Choosing the right color palette for newborn photos

When it comes to color palette, I always recommend sticking to soft, neutral, and light tones. This helps keep the focus on your newborn, rather than the brightest color in the room. Even when using an accent color, it’s best to choose something muted and low-saturation—such as dusty pink, soft aqua, or light blue. These tones add interest without overwhelming the image. Bright or highly saturated colors—like neon green or vivid orange—can feel distracting and are less likely to stand the test of time.

Another important reason to avoid strong colors is how they interact with your baby’s skin. During most newborn sessions, you’ll be holding your baby close, and bright clothing can reflect onto their skin, creating unwanted color casts.

By keeping your palette soft and neutral, your photos will feel more cohesive, timeless, and naturally focused on your baby.

What mom should wear for newborn photos

With two C-sections myself, I truly understand how challenging it can be to dress your postpartum body. As much as I want you to look your best, my priority is making sure you feel comfortable. Newborn sessions typically last 1–2 hours, and I want you to feel relaxed and at ease in every moment. I recommend choosing soft, comfortable pieces—especially for my boho lifestyle setup, where many poses involve sitting or lying on the bed. Flowy dresses work beautifully, both visually and practically, allowing you to move comfortably through each pose. Jeans, on the other hand, can feel restrictive when sitting or lying down.

It’s also best to avoid bright or highly saturated colors. In most lifestyle newborn photos, you’ll be holding your baby close, and strong colors can reflect onto your baby’s skin, creating an unflattering color cast. I highly recommend sticking to soft, neutral tones such as white, beige, and earthy color palettes.

Many moms also choose to wear pieces from my maternity wardrobe, which are carefully selected to photograph beautifully in newborn and family sessions. You can view the maternity wardrobe here.

What dad should wear for newborn photos

For dads, keeping things simple is always the best approach. Stick to solid, neutral colors and avoid large logos or busy patterns, which can be distracting in photos.

During the holiday season, plaid patterns are always a popular choice. My recommendation is to use plaid as an accent rather than the main focus—for example, layering a plaid shirt under a solid-colored sweater instead of wearing a full plaid outfit.

A classic and easy option is a solid neutral shirt (white, beige, or light gray) paired with khaki or other neutral-toned pants. This combination photographs clean, timeless, and cohesive with the overall family styling. For my boho lifestyle setup, I also recommend skipping the Apple Watch if possible—classic watches tend to photograph much more timelessly and blend better with the overall aesthetic.

What siblings should wear for newborn photos

For older children, the styling can follow the same general guidelines as adults—keeping a consistent color palette and overall style with the rest of the family. Choose soft, neutral tones and avoid large logos or cartoon characters, as these can be distracting in photos. Keeping outfits simple with minimal details helps maintain a clean and timeless look.

For toddlers, comfort and movement are especially important. Avoid tight or restrictive clothing, as toddlers need to move freely during the session. Structured or stiff fabrics—like certain corduroy dresses—may not photograph well, especially when sitting or lying down, and can sometimes reveal diapers unintentionally. Soft, flexible fabrics tend to work much better.

I know many parents love preparing “Big Brother” or “Big Sister” outfits. While these are sweet in concept, in reality the text is often not clearly visible during the session. For safety reasons, I don’t have toddlers hold newborns unsupported—most sibling poses involve the toddler lying down while holding their baby sibling—so the wording on the outfit may not be captured.

For my studio sessions, I typically keep things simple with one outfit and one wrap.

For my boho lifestyle setup, I provide a curated selection of newborn wardrobe options. All pieces are chosen in soft, neutral tones and made from gentle, comfortable materials—so your baby stays cozy and remains the true focus of the photos.

The most important factor: size

The single most important factor when choosing a newborn outfit is the size.

As a mom of two, I completely understand the instinct to size up—babies grow so quickly, and for everyday clothing, I do the same. However, for photos, proper fit makes a huge difference.

👉 For babies under 2 weeks old, I highly recommend choosing newborn size
👉 Avoid: 0–1 month or 0–3 month sizes

Newborns are tiny, and oversized outfits can look baggy, hide their shape, and take attention away from your baby—especially in family photos.

Keep it soft, simple, and meaningful

For in-home sessions, you can choose wraps or outfits that complement your home’s interior style to create a more cohesive look.

You’re also always welcome to bring:

  • Meaningful pieces
  • Heirloom or legacy items
  • Personalized outfits

These details can add a beautiful personal touch to your session.

Accessories

Most newborns don’t have enough hair to hold clips securely, so headbands are usually the better option.

I have a collection of soft headbands available in the studio, and I recommend choosing ones that:

  • Match the outfit
  • Stay minimal in size

Avoid oversized headbands that cover too much of your baby’s face—the goal is always to keep the focus on your baby.
